  • be working for an or have a job offer from one
  • be offered or have an approved transport job that is and permanent or fixed-term for at least 12 months
  • have worked in New Zealand for 24 months in an approved transport job
  • speak and understand English
  • meet the other requirements of this visa.

This visa lets you:

  • include your partner and dependent children aged 24 or younger in your visa application.

How long you can stay

A Transport Work to Residence Visa lets you stay in New Zealand indefinitely.

After you have had this visa for 2 years in a row, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa that lets you travel in and out of New Zealand indefinitely.

Who can apply

To apply for this visa, you must:

  • be aged 55 or younger
  • have a work visa for at least 24 months before you apply
  • have been working in New Zealand for 24 months in an approved transport job before you apply
  • have an offer of, or be working in, an approved transport job with an accredited employer
  • be in good health
  • be of good character
  • speak and understand English.

Age

You must be aged 55 or younger when you apply.

We will check your identity document to confirm your age.

Your work visa

For at least 24 months before you apply, you must have a work visa or a Critical Purpose Visitor Visa that allows you to work.

We will check our records to confirm that, for the full 24 months before you apply, you had:

  • 1 or more work visas
  • a Critical Purpose Visitor Visa that allowed you to work, or
  • an Interim Visa which we gave you when you applied for:
    • another work visa, or
    • a Critical Purpose Visitor Visa that allowed you to work.

Previous job

Before you apply, you must have worked in New Zealand in an acceptable transport job for at least 24 months in total.

Evidence of your work experience can include any documents that show:

  • the work you did
  • how much you were paid
  • when you did the work
  • how many hours a week you worked (on average)
  • the locations you did the work in
  • the contact details of your employers.

Documents you can provide include:

  • employment agreements or contracts
  • letters offering you the job
  • job descriptions, payslips and letters of long service
  • a summary of earnings or tax statements from Inland Revenue.

Documents from your employers should be on official company letterhead and signed by an authorised person.

Note

If you provided these documents with your most recent work visa application, only provide them again if something like your pay and conditions have changed since you applied for your work visa.

When we assess your application, we may ask for more evidence, such as bank statements or pay slips, showing your salary payments.

 Calculating 24 months of work

You must have worked in an acceptable transport job for at least 24 months in the 30 months before you apply. You can start counting your 24 months of work any time on or after 29 September 2021.

To make up the 24 months, you can:

  • count time working in approved transport jobs from the past 24 months
  • count annual, bereavement or other leave you are legally entitled to, such as parental leave
  • complete it in several stretches — for example, you could work for 2 lots of 12 months with a gap of 6 months in between
  • work for some of the time in a job that is not in land or maritime transport, but it must be:
    • in Tier 2 of our Green List of in-demand jobs
    • a care workforce job, or
    • a job that paid at least twice the median wage at the time.

Approved transport jobs from 7 April 2024

The following jobs are approved work to residence transport jobs from 7 April 2024.

Note

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANSCO) code refers to the ANZSCO list of jobs that grades jobs according to skill level. ANZSCO skill levels range from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most skilled and 5 being less skilled.

Ship's master

ANZSCO code: 231231

On the day you apply for your residence visa you must:

  • be currently working for, or have a job offer from, a New Zealand employer as a ship's master
  • have been working for at least 24 months as a ship's master
  • have been paid at least the median wage for 24 months
  • hold either:
    • the Skipper Restricted Limits qualification with 500GT or 3000GT endorsement, or
    • a Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) certificate for duties of a Ship's Master on a vessel that is 500 gross tonnes or more (as recognised by Maritime New Zealand).

On the day you apply for your residence visa you must:

  • be currently working for, or have a job offer from, a New Zealand employer as a deck hand
  • have been working for at least 24 months as a deck hand
  • have been paid at least the median wage for 24 months
  • hold either a:
    • Qualified Deck Crew Certificate of Proficiency (CoP), or
    • Deck Watch Rating (DWR) Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) that entitles the holder to perform the duties of Deck Hand (as recognised by Maritime New Zealand).

Approved transport jobs before 7 April 2024

The following transport jobs count towards your 24 months of work experience if, before 7 April 2024, you:

  • started working in 1 of these jobs on any work visa
  • received an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) to work in 1 of these jobs
  • applied for an AEWV to work in 1 of these jobs, and were successful in your application, or
  • signed an employment agreement and had started work within 1 month of either signing it or being given a non-AEWV visa, for example, a Partner of Worker Work Visa.
Bus driver

Before 7 April 2024, you must have been:

  • working for a New Zealand employer and your job was passenger bus driver
  • working for at least 24 months as a passenger bus driver in New Zealand
  • paid at least NZD $28 an hour for 24 months
  • holding a class 2 New Zealand driver licence with a passenger endorsement.

You must have been working:

  • in a job paying at least NZD $28 an hour
  • for an employer who has signed an All Parties Memorandum of Understanding on Improving Driver Terms and Conditions for the region you are working in, or
  • as a school bus driver on a:
    • Ministry of Education-funded school bus service, or
    • a service directly contracted to a school.

  • working for a New Zealand employer and your job was driver of a class 4 or 5 vehicle
  • working for at least 24 months driving a class 4 or 5 vehicle
  • have been paid at least the median wage for 24 months
  • holding a New Zealand class 4 or 5 driver licence.

Current job

You must have the offer of a job or already work in an approved transport job, and your job must be:

  • with an accredited employer
  • permanent or fixed-term for at least 12 months
  • paid at least the current , unless you are a bus driver.

Documents you can provide include:

  • an employment agreement
  • a fixed-term contract
  • a letter offering you a job and describing your job, hours of work, length of employment and what you will be paid.

Health

You, and anyone else included in your application, must be in good health.

You, and anyone else included, must complete a chest X-ray and medical examination.

If you have provided medical certificates to us before and those certificates were issued within the last 3 years, you may not need to provide them again.

Note

Evidence of a chest X-ray or medical examination must be less than 3 months old when we receive it.

Health of your children aged 14 or younger

Dependent children included in your application:

  • aged 10 or younger, must get a medical examination, but do not need a chest X-ray unless we or your  ask for one
  • aged 11 to 14, must get a medical examination and a chest X-ray, but only need a blood test if we or your panel physician ask for one.

Character

You, and anyone else included in your application, must be of good character.

If you, or anyone else included, are aged 17 or older, you must provide police certificates that are less than 6 months old when you apply.

If you have a criminal conviction, or are a security risk to New Zealand, we might not give you a visa.

You must get police certificates from:

  • countries you are a citizen of, and
  • countries where you have spent 12 months or more in over the last 10 years — even if those 12 months were not all in one stay.

Police certificates must show any criminal records you have had at any time in any of these countries — not only in the last 10 years.

If we ask for a new police certificate when processing your application, you will need to send us a new one.

Relationship with family

If you include your partner and dependent children in your application, you must have a genuine relationship with them.

You need to provide documents — like marriage and birth certificates — that prove your relationship to your partner and dependent children aged 24 or younger.

If your partner or dependent children already have, or are applying for, a work, student or visitor visa based on their relationship to you, you must include them in your residence application.

English language

You must speak and understand English.

There are 2 ways to show us that you speak and understand English – through:

  • your citizenship, where you studied and the qualifications you gained
  • English language tests.

The results of your English language test must:

  • meet the minimum score we set
  • be no more than 2 years old when you apply.

Your partner, and any dependent children aged 16 or older, must speak English or pay for classes to learn English in New Zealand.

There are 3 ways your partner and dependent children can show us they speak English – through:

  • their citizenship, where they studied and the qualifications they gained
  • English language tests
  • paying for English language lessons.

The results of their English language test must:

  • meet the minimum score we set
  • be no more than 2 years old when you apply.

Note

When we assess your application, we may ask for more proof of your and your family's ability to speak English. If we do, you and your family may have to sit tests and send us the results.

Documents you need

When you apply

When you apply, you will need to provide:

  • a copy of your passport or
  • 1 acceptable photo
  • evidence of a chest X-ray
  • evidence of a medical examination
  • police certificates
  • evidence that you can speak and understand English
  • evidence that you have worked in an approved transport job for 24 months
  • evidence you have a job offer or already work in an approved transport job with an accredited employer
  • translated versions of all your documents if they are not in English.

If you are including your partner and dependent children, provide:

  • documents to show your relationship with them
  • proof of their identity and acceptable photos
  • police certificates, if required
  • evidence of chest X-rays and medical examinations, if required
  • evidence they can speak English or have paid for English language lessons.

After you apply, we may contact you and ask for:

  • your original passport
  • more evidence such as bank statements or pay slips showing your salary payments
  • more evidence of your ability to speak and understand English.

    Step 1: Gather your documents

    Get documents translated

    For your application you must provide:

    • certified English translations of any documents that are not in English
    • copies of the original documents.

    Documents must be translated by someone who meets our requirements for providing English translations.

    Organise proof of identity, citizenship and age

    If you, or your family if they are included, need a new passport, allow enough time to get it.

    When you apply, make sure you enter your identity details exactly as they appear on your passport or certificate of identity.

    If there are any mistakes in your identity details, your application will be delayed. We may also decline your application or refuse you entry to New Zealand.

    Make sure your photos are acceptable for a New Zealand visa.

    Organise proof for your partner and dependent children, if required

    If you are including your partner and dependent children in your application, get documents that show your relationship with them and proof of their identity.

    Book medical appointments, if required

    If you have determined you, and your family if included, need chest X-rays or medical examinations, you will need to book appointments.

    To complete your application, you will need to provide the:

    • reference code from the clinic submitting your health information
    • name of the clinic submitting your health information, if there is no eMedical reference code, or
    • medical certificate, chest X-ray certificate, or both if the clinic gave these to you.

    Note

    Evidence of a chest X-ray or medical examination must be less than 3 months old when we receive it. Allow yourself enough time to get these.

    Evidence of working in, and having a job offer of, an approved transport job can be copies of:

    • New Zealand qualifications
    • licences required for an approved transport job
    • an employment agreement and job description (previous and current) stating the length of employment, position and remuneration and
    • a summary of earnings from Inland Revenue confirming a period of at least 24 months' work.

    If you are already in New Zealand, you must have a valid visa. If your current temporary visa is going to expire while you are waiting for our decision, we will normally issue you an interim visa to let you stay in New Zealand lawfully.

How to pay and submit

While you are in New Zealand

Your visa conditions are recorded in your eVisa.

Travel

You can travel in and out of New Zealand as many times as you like until your travel conditions expire.

Your travel conditions expire 2 years from:

  • the date you first arrive in New Zealand as a resident, or
  • the date your visa is issued, if you are already in New Zealand.

To travel after that, you need to:

  • get a Permanent Resident Visa, or
  • extend your travel conditions, which would let you return to New Zealand at a later date.

With a Permanent Resident Visa, you can travel in and out of New Zealand indefinitely, as long as you keep your visa in a valid passport.

If your passport expires, you must apply to transfer your visa to a new passport before you can travel.

With a Permanent Resident Visa, you can travel in and out of New Zealand indefinitely, as long as you keep your visa in a valid passport.
