You can do volunteer work while on a student visa in New Zealand, provided you are not paid or rewarded.

You can do volunteer work while in New Zealand on a student visa. But to be a volunteer, you must not expect or receive any gain or reward for your work.

Meaning of gain or reward

Gain or reward means any payment or benefit that can be valued in terms of money. Examples include:

  • accommodation, such as board or lodging
  • goods, such as food or clothing
  • services, such as transport
  • wages, salary or stipend.

If your intention is to get a gain or reward from your volunteer work, you are not considered to be a volunteer.
