If your relationship ends

When a relationship ends, it can affect your visa status if you have a partnership-based visa, or your eligibility for a visa if you have applied for one.

If your partner has supported your partner-based visa or included you in their visa application, your visa status may be affected if your relationship ends.

Work and visitor visas

If you have separated from, or divorced, your partner while on a partnership-based work or visitor visa, you will need to:

  • apply for a visitor or work visa in your own right, or
  • leave within a reasonable time.

If you stay in New Zealand on a partnership-based visa when the relationship has ended, you may be liable for deportation.

Resident visas

If we have already given you a resident visa based on your relationship, or you were included in your partner's resident visa, your residence status will remain unchanged if the relationship ends.
