Apply for this visa if you want to visit New Zealand for business reasons. You must have enough money to live on while you are here or have the financial support of your employer.

To apply you must:

  • be visiting New Zealand on business for up to 3 months in 1 year
  • have enough money to cover your living expenses while in New Zealand or have your employer support you
  • meet the other requirements of this visa.

This visa lets you:

  • visit New Zealand for
  • study for up to 3 months
  • include your partner and dependent children in your application.

If you are from a visa waiver country you do not need a Business Visitor Visa, but you must have a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before travelling to New Zealand.

How long you can stay

You can stay in New Zealand on a Business Visitor Visa for up to 3 months in 1 year.

Who can apply

To apply for this visa you must:

  • be visiting on business for up to 3 months in 1 year
  • be in good health
  • be of good character
  • have a genuine reason for coming to New Zealand
  • have enough money to pay your expenses, have financial support from your employer or government, or have an acceptable sponsor
  • have plans to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay.

Business reasons for visiting

You must be visiting New Zealand for .

You will need to provide a letter from your employer or the New Zealand company you are doing business with. The letter must confirm:

  • your employment, and
  • the business reasons for your visit.

Note

Some business reasons may require you to get a work visa instead of a visitor visa. Explore your work visa options:

Find and choose a visa

Health

You must be in good health. 

We may ask you to have a chest X-ray, a medical examination or both as proof of your health.

If you are staying less than:

  • 6 months, you do not normally need a chest X-ray
  • 12 months, you do not normally need a medical certificate.

When you apply, you must answer questions about your health. This will decide if you need to provide evidence of a chest X-ray or medical examination to complete your application. Even if you do not need these when you apply, we may ask for them when we process your application.

Who needs an X-ray or medical examination

Applicants from China, Hong Kong or Macao applying within China, Hong Kong or Macao

You must provide a chest X-ray completed in the last 3 months, even if you have provided one to us previously, if:

  • you have spent 6 months in a row in China since the last X-ray certificate was issued, and
  • you are now coming to New Zealand for more than 6 months.

Character

You may need to provide police certificates as proof of your good character.

If you have a criminal conviction, or are a security risk to New Zealand, we may not give you a visa.

You must provide police certificates that are less than 6 months old when you apply if:

  • you are aged 17 or older, and
  • your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer — this includes time you spent in New Zealand in the past on other visas.

Police certificates must be from:

  • countries you are a citizen of, and
  • countries you have spent more than 5 years in since you turned 17.

You do not need to provide police certificates if you provided them with an earlier visa application and they are less than 24 months old.

If we ask for a new police certificate when processing your application, you will need to send us a new one.

Genuine intentions

You must have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand.

When we decide if your intentions are genuine, we will consider all the information that:

  • you provide to support your application
  • we have about your personal circumstances
  • you have previously given to us.

Have enough money to live on

You must have enough money to live on while you are in New Zealand, have the financial support of your employer or government, or have an acceptable sponsor.

If you are paying for yourself

You must have at least NZD $1,000 a month, or NZD $400 a month if you have already paid for your accommodation.

Evidence can include:

  • proof of accommodation pre-payment, like hotel pre-paid vouchers or receipts
  • bank statements or credit card statements
  • bank drafts or traveller's cheques.

If you have financial support from your employer or government

You must provide a letter from your employer or government confirming financial support.

If you have a sponsor

Your sponsor is responsible for you while you are in New Zealand — they can be an organisation or an individual.

Sponsorship process for a visa

Your sponsor must complete a Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry.

Your sponsor can provide supporting documents including:

  • recent bank statements
  • pay slips
  • their employment agreement
  • ownership papers for your accommodation or receipts for rent payments.

Paying for health care

You or your sponsor will need to pay for any health care or medical assistance you may need in New Zealand.

Some health care is funded by the New Zealand Government.

Who can get public health care

If you are pregnant, there are additional requirements. If you have a sponsor, they can agree to pay for your maternity care.

Leaving New Zealand

When you arrive in New Zealand, you must be able to show that you plan to leave the country at the end of your stay.

If you are paying for yourself, you will need to provide:

  • your ticket for travel out of New Zealand at the end of your stay to a , or
  • documents, such as bank or credit card statements, that show you have enough money to buy a ticket.

Note

The money for your ticket must be in addition to what you have to live on.

If you are sponsored and you do not have a return ticket, your sponsor can provide recent bank statements to show they have enough money to buy you a ticket out of New Zealand.

Partner and dependent children

You can include your and any dependent children aged 19 or younger in your visa application, or they can apply for their own visas.

To include family in your application:

  • you must provide evidence of your relationship with them, for example, marriage and birth certificates
  • you must provide proof of their identity
  • they must be of good character and be in good health.

When you apply

When you apply, you will need to provide:

  • a copy of your passport or — if you apply on paper, you can provide a , but we can usually process your visa application faster if you provide the original
  • 1 acceptable photo if you apply online, or 2 photos if you apply on paper
  • police certificates, if required
  • a chest X-ray certificate, if required
  • a medical certificate, if required
  • documents to show your relationship with your partner and dependent children, proof of their identity and acceptable photos, if you are including them
  • a copy of the completed form 'Additional Dependants for a Visitor Visa', if required
  • a copy of the completed 'Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry', if you have a sponsor
  • your sponsor's sharing ID, if required for an online application
  • translated versions of all your documents if they are not in English.

Your passport or certificate of identity must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave New Zealand. 

Alert

You may not be allowed to check in to your flight if your passport is close to expiring. Check that it will not expire while you are in New Zealand or close to when you plan to leave New Zealand.

After you apply

After you apply, we may contact you and ask for:

  • evidence of a medical examination or chest X-ray
  • police certificates as proof of your good character.

When you arrive

When you arrive, you will need to have:

  • a ticket to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay, proof you have enough money to buy one, or agreement that a sponsor will pay for your ticket to leave New Zealand
  • proof you have enough money to live on for your stay in New Zealand.

    Get documents translated

    For your application you must provide:

    • English translations of any documents that are not in English
    • scanned copies of the original documents.

    Note

    Documents must be translated by someone who meets our requirements for providing English translations.

    Organise proof of identity, citizenship and age

    If you need a new passport, allow yourself enough time to get it.

    When you apply, make sure you enter your identity details exactly as they appear on your passport or certificate of identity.

    If there are any mistakes in your identity details, your application will be delayed. We may also decline your application or refuse you entry to New Zealand.

    Make sure your photos are acceptable for a New Zealand visa.

    Book medical appointments, if required

    If you apply online, whether you need an X-ray or medical examination will depend on the health information you give us. We will contact you if we need you to organise a medical appointment.

    If they are needed, evidence of a chest X-ray or medical examination must be less than 3 months old when we receive them.

    Allow yourself enough time to get these.

    Apply for police certificates, if required

    If you are already in New Zealand, you must have a valid visa. If your current temporary visa is going to expire while you are waiting for our decision, we will normally give you an interim visa to let you stay in New Zealand lawfully.

    Note

    If you are already in New Zealand, you must have a valid visa. If your current temporary visa is going to expire while you are waiting for our decision, we will normally give you an Interim Visa to let you stay in New Zealand lawfully.

How to pay and submit

When you get your visa

Your visa is valid from:

  • the date you enter New Zealand, if you are outside New Zealand
  • the date your visa is granted, if you are already in New Zealand.

You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.

Note

Visa expiry dates are printed on a visa label or included in a visa letter.

When you arrive

Entry permission

You must apply for permission to enter New Zealand before you arrive. You do this by completing a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) form.

You can start your digital declaration any time, but the earliest you can submit it is 24 hours before starting your travel to New Zealand.

A paper declaration form is available for travellers who cannot complete it online.

Arriving in New Zealand

Alert

You can be refused entry permission if you:

  • are not a genuine visitor
  • do not meet our character requirements
  • have had a change in circumstances since we issued your visa
  • refuse to let us take your photo, fingerprints or an iris scan
  • cannot provide evidence of any onward travel or the money required to leave New Zealand.

While you are in New Zealand

Your visa conditions are recorded in your eVisa.

Travel

If you are travelling in and out of New Zealand, your visa must have a valid so you can return to New Zealand.

Check or change your visa conditions

Alert

If your visa does not have a multiple-entry travel condition and you leave New Zealand, your visa will expire.

Unless your visa states "Return/onward travel not required" you must have a ticket to leave New Zealand whenever you travel here.

Work

You can only carry out the specific business that we approved your visa for.

While you are in New Zealand, you may be able to work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.

If you will need to work in New Zealand for more than 3 months, consider applying for a Specific Purpose or Event Work Visa instead. 

Study

You can study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period.

School-aged children can study for up to 3 months in any calendar year.

Note

If children are going to be studying for more than 2 weeks, their education provider must be a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021.

If you will need to work in New Zealand for more than 3 months, consider applying for a Specific Purpose or Event Work Visa instead of a Business Visitor Visa.
