Visa status of children born in New Zealand

The immigration status of a child born in New Zealand depends on their parents' status — they are not automatically a New Zealand citizen.

Citizenship of a child born in New Zealand

A child born in New Zealand on or after 1 January 2006 is not automatically considered a New Zealand citizen if the parents are not New Zealand citizens.

You can read more about this on the Govt.nz website. There is also information about children born in New Zealand to parents who are New Zealand residents.

Visa entitlement

If a child born in New Zealand is not eligible for New Zealand citizenship at birth, they are automatically given a visa if either parent has a visa when the child is born.

The type of visa the child is given depends on the visas their parents have when the child is born.

The child’s visa is valid until they leave New Zealand, or their immigration status changes.

If your child is not eligible for New Zealand citizenship at birth, we recommend that you ask Immigration New Zealand for a statement of your child’s immigration status to confirm the type and duration of the visa they are entitled to hold.
