Who can work in New Zealand?

The following people can work in New Zealand:

  • those who have the authority to live in New Zealand
  • holders of Work Visas, within the conditions stated on their Work Visa
  • holders of Working Holiday visas
  • holders of Visitor Visas if a condition on their visa states they are allowed to undertake employment
  • holders of Student visas if a condition on their visa states they are allowed to undertake employment.

Work is defined as an activity which you are paid to do, either in salary or wages, or another benefit like accommodation, food or transport.

Work doesn’t include:

  • business visits for less than 3 months
  • activities by visiting media, academics, sports people and their support staff, or approved festival performers and their crew
  • official business for a foreign government
  • volunteer work for the Department of Conservation (DOC).
