Do I need to be sponsored by my family for residence?

Sponsoring residence applications is only possible (and required) under certain categories, such as Parent, Refugee Family Support, Talent (Arts, Culture and Sport) or Religious Worker.

A partner or spouse of a New Zealand citizen or resident does not require sponsorship, but must have support from their partner.

A dependant child of a New Zealand citizen or resident does not require sponsorship.

Skilled Migrant category, Investor categories, or the Entrepreneur category do not require/allow sponsorship.

On 7 October 2019, the Government announced the Parent Resident Visa would be reopening in 2020, however this was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Refer to the News centre for more information.

There is no visa category allowing a parent who is a NZ citizen/resident to support an adult (non-dependent) child for New Zealand residency, and no visa category allowing a person who is a NZ citizen/resident to support their brother or sister for New Zealand residency (except for the Refugee Family Support category)
