Each year, people arrive in New Zealand as refugees through the Refugee Quota Programme, the Refugee Family Support Category, and other programmes or humanitarian interventions.

Refugee and protection
The Refugee and Protection Unit promotes the successful resettlement of refugees in New Zealand. We work with government and international agencies to help refugees who arrive here under our quota. This is part of New Zealand’s Refugee Resettlement Strategy.

The National Leadership Coordination Service
The Refugee Health National Leadership Coordination Service (NLCS) was commissioned by Health New Zealand (Te Whatu Ora) in 2023 and is delivered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

The Refugee Advisory Panel works to support government decision-makers and policy developers on matters impacting refugees in New Zealand.

Improving our processes for asylum
In 2021 an independent review was commissioned about the detention of asylum claimants. The review made 11 recommendations and Immigration New Zealand accepted all of these.

Welcoming
Welcoming Communities is a programme led by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) in partnership with the Ministry of Ethnic Communities and the Human Rights Commission. Welcoming Communities works towards healthier, happier and more productive communities by welcoming newcomers into the local community.
