Student visa processing update – midyear intake and reminder to apply early
Immigration New Zealand is reminding prospective international students to apply for their Student visa as early as possible.
We recommend applying at least 3 months ahead of travel, due to increased application volumes and a rise in applications submitted close to intended study start dates.
New Zealand remains a popular destination for international students, with approximately 20 percent more student visa applications received year to date in 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
We have also seen a higher proportion of applications from markets that require more complex assessment and verification. These applications can take longer to process because additional checks may be needed before a decision can be made.
Apply at least 3 months ahead of your travel date
Students outside New Zealand are strongly encouraged to apply for a Student visa at least 3 months ahead of their intended travel date.
Students who apply late must be aware that there may not be enough time for their application to be processed before their intended study start date.
Students can view current Student visa wait times on our website. Wait times are updated weekly and are based on applications processed during the previous 4 weeks.
Wait times
Wait times vary depending on the information provided, the checks required, and the complexity of the application. We do not provide guaranteed processing timeframes for Student visa applications.
We continue to process applications as quickly as possible while ensuring the necessary checks are completed to support the integrity of New Zealand's Immigration system.
Offer of Place
Students who are still waiting on final academic results or other study documentation should apply as soon as they are able to submit a complete application. Applicants outside New Zealand may be able to apply using a conditional Offer of Place while their education provider finalises enrolment requirements. This allows us to begin assessing the application. An unconditional Offer of Place is required before a visa can be granted.
Education providers and agents are encouraged to continue supporting students to apply early and ensure applications are complete and accompanied by the required documentation.
If you applied late
Students who intend to start study in the July intake and submitted applications in May or June, particularly from markets where applications generally require more extensive verification, should discuss contingency arrangements with their education provider. This may include considering a later intake where appropriate.
