Immigration scam phone calls on the rise
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is aware of recent phone scams, with callers pretending to be from INZ and using New Zealand mobile numbers. These calls are not genuine.
Immigration New Zealand will never contact you by phone asking for payments.
Scammers often claim there is an urgent problem with your visa to create pressure or fear. They may ask you to “press 1” or speak to an operator. In some cases, callers have demanded payment, requested personal information such as passport or bank details, or threatened legal action if you do not comply.
These calls do not come from INZ, and we urge people not to engage.
What to do if you receive a suspicious call
If you or someone you know receives a suspicious call:
- do not provide any personal or financial information
- hang up immediately
- report the scam to CERT NZ using their online reporting form:
Reporting form for businesses and individuals — CERT NZ
- if you are in New Zealand, you can also call Netsafe on 0508 638 723.
