Immigration control areas at New Zealand airports
There are 7 immigration control areas (ICAs) where we carry out immigration checks on people arriving or leaving New Zealand by air.
These designations have been in effect since 2010 under section 382 of the Immigration Act 2009, with updates to all (except Rotorua International Airport) in 2025.
Auckland International Airport
The immigration control area is the aerodrome as defined in the Civil Aviation Act 2023, as controlled by Auckland International Airport Limited.
This is represented in the yellow area in the image below. The red area represents Auckland International Airport Limited’s wider land holdings that do not meet the aerodrome (and therefore ICA) definition.

Hamilton International Airport
The immigration control area is the aerodrome as defined in the Civil Aviation Act 2023, as controlled by Waikato Regional Airport Limited at 201 Airport Road, RD2, Hamilton.

Rotorua International Airport
The immigration control area is the airport operated by Rotorua International Airport Limited at State Highway 30, Rotorua.
Wellington International Airport
The immigration control area is the aerodrome as defined in the Civil Aviation Act 2023, as controlled by Wellington International Airport Limited.

Christchurch International Airport

Queenstown International Airport
The immigration control area is the aerodrome as defined in the Civil Aviation Act 2023, as controlled by Queenstown Airport Corporation Limited at Sir Henry Wigley Drive, Frankton, Queenstown.
