Children may be eligible to be included in a visa application submitted by their parent. If you have a current visa application which has not been decided by Immigration New Zealand, you may be able to request for your child to be added to the application.
Temporary Visa applications
Your child may be eligible to be included in your Visitor Visa application. Note that secondary applicants cannot be included in a Student Visa or Work Visa application, however your dependants may be able to apply for their own visa based on yours.
To request for your child to be added to your Visitor Visa application, please provide the following documents to the branch processing your application:
- a completed Additional Dependants for a Visitor Visa (INZ 1205) form
- a cover letter requesting for the child to be added
- an acceptable travel document
- child's full birth certificate
- two passport-sized photographs (paper application only)
- digital passport photo (online application only)
- a completed medical certificate (if required)

Who needs an X-ray or medical examination
You will need to send these documents to the same branch you initially sent your paper application to, or upload these to your online application.

Resident Visa applications
Your child may be eligible to be included in your Resident Visa application.
To request for your child to be added to your Resident Visa application, please provide the following documents to the branch processing your application:
- a completed Additional Dependants for Residence in New Zealand (INZ 1001) form (other categories)
- a cover letter requesting for the child to be added
- an acceptable travel document
- child's full birth certificate
- two passport-sized photographs (paper application only)
- digital passport photo (online application only)
- a completed medical certificate

Partner of a New Zealander Resident Visa applications
Please note that if your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident and your child was born in New Zealand, your child may be eligible for New Zealand citizenship.
If your partner is a New Zealand citizen and your child was born outside New Zealand, your child may be eligible for New Zealand citizenship by descent.
The Department of Internal Affairs determines eligibility for citizenship.
