Job check: check what you need and apply

As an employer you must be accredited and have advertised the role in New Zealand, if you need to, before applying for a job check.

Start your application if you have everything you need to apply.

You will be taken to a RealMe® login. Once you login you will go to the Immigration Online dashboard.

To start a new job check in the portal:

  1. select the Employ migrants tab
  2. go to the My granted accreditations section
  3. select View accreditation from the Options dropdown list
  4. select Request a job check to start your application.

Before you apply for a job check

Before you start an application you need to have:

  • accreditation to hire on the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
  • an acceptable job offer, job description and employment agreement
  • evidence you advertised if the job pays less than twice the median wage or is not on the Green List
  • the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) code that best matches the job you are offering based on the INZ view of ANZSCO.

An acceptable job offer

The job must fulfil the requirements for an AEWV. It must:

  • be for at least 30 hours a week
  • pay the market rate and at least the New Zealand median wage of NZD $27.76 an hour, unless it is on an exemption list.

An acceptable employment agreement

This is an unsigned draft contract for the job you are hiring for. It needs to have:

  • you named as the direct employer
  • paid leave entitlements
  • include all clauses required by employment law and exclude clauses that do not comply
  • the maximum number of hours the employee may be asked to work before being paid additional overtime rates
  • wages and the pay period
  • the overtime rate of pay
  • guaranteed hours and actual pay
  • the number of hours the employee may be asked to work, including any hours paid at overtime rates.

You can still negotiate these with the worker, as long as the actual hours are within the range provided at the job check – this helps us check the guaranteed pay rate if we need to.

Evidence you have advertised

This evidence needs to show that you advertised for at least 2 weeks on a national job listing website where suitable New Zealanders are likely to apply, or another advertising channel more likely to attract New Zealanders.

You must advertise within 90 days of your job check application.

You also need to include a copy of the job ad that shows:

  • the job description
  • the minimum and maximum pay
  • the location
  • minimum hours of work
  • estimated actual earnings if the job pays by piece, commission or there are other rates or bonuses
  • the minimum skills, experience and qualifications for the role.

If you use a recruitment agency to list the advert you may be asked to show evidence that it is linked to the role included in your job check application, if your business name is not specified in the advert.

You need to hire someone within 6 months of the job check approval being granted before it expires or is cancelled.

Including multiple roles in one job check

You can include multiple roles in one job check as long as:

  • the job details are the same ⁠— for example they all have the same occupation, pay, location and minimum requirements
  • they are covered by the same advertising and employment agreement.

If the location, job title, or terms of work vary you will need a separate job check for each role.

Once your job check is approved

You will receive an email confirming your job check has been approved.

Log in to Immigration Online to view your approved jobs or ask a migrant to apply for an AEWV.

Your approved jobs are listed in the 'Approved jobs' section on the Accredited organisation, Accreditation certificate and Job check summary pages.

To ask a suitably skilled migrant to apply for an AEWV:

  1. go to your Approved jobs
  2. select Send request from the Options drop down list
  3. enter the migrant's full name and email address
  4. select submit.

The migrant will receive an email with a unique link asking them to log in and apply for an AEWV.

You must give them a copy of their employment agreement and a copy of the signed employment offer before they begin their application.

To start an application the migrant will need to click on the unique link and confirm the role and employer details.

The link contains a job token that connects the migrant's application with your approved job check. The application will pre-fill some information from the approved job check.

You can re-use the job token to offer the job to another suitable applicant if the migrant declines the job or does not meet the visa requirements. You do not need to redo the job check unless it has expired.

The job token cannot be re-used if it has already been used to approve a work visa.

A job token cannot be used at the same time for another work visa application.

If multiple jobs are approved for the same job check, each job will have an individual token. Each job token is included in a unique link – one job token for one work visa.

You can still offer the job to a New Zealander if you cannot find a migrant.

Application being reconsidered

Where an AEWV application has been declined but the applicant is eligible to have their application reconsidered, you cannot use the same approved job to support another AEWV application until the reconsideration is decided, or until you tell us you have withdrawn the employment offer from the applicant.

Employment offer withdrawn

If you tell us you have withdrawn the employment offer from an AEWV applicant, and the AEWV application has not been decided, you can re-use the approved job to support another AEWV application.
