Using VisaView to check if someone can study at your organisation

VisaView is an online service that allows education providers to check the immigration status of a person and whether they can study with them in New Zealand.

Check if someone can study with your organisation

Any New Zealand education provider can use the VisaView system. Once you have registered, you can check whether a current or prospective student has a valid visa, the conditions of the visa, and the date it will expire.

To do this, you need to enter the person's:

  • passport number
  • nationality, and
  • family name.

The VisaView system will advise whether or not the person can study with you and any conditions that apply.

The system can be used to check the immigration status of both international and domestic students.

It also allows you to confirm the visa status of those enrolling in short-term courses.

A visa label is not required

You can use the VisaView system to check if someone is eligible to work or study in New Zealand whether or not the person's passport contains a visa label.

Note

Immigration New Zealand also offers a VisaView service for employers and a visa verification service for other third parties.

How to register for VisaView

You must nominate an account administrator to register your organisation with the VisaView system. Once we have verified that you are a genuine New Zealand education provider, your administrator will be able to make queries in the system.

The administrator can invite other users to act on behalf of the education provider. Only persons within the organisation who need access to immigration status information for a lawful purpose should be invited to use VisaView.

All users will need a RealMe log-in to access VisaView, and must agree to our terms and conditions of use.

What is RealMe?

Getting the consent of the visa holder

The person whose visa you are checking (the visa holder) must give you their consent to do so. They can do this verbally or in writing (for example, in your enrolment forms or the visa application).

Note

New Zealand student visa applications include a declaration giving consent to INZ for the release of information to education providers.

The information you will see

VisaView displays only information about the person's current visa, including the expiry date and any conditions attached to the visa. Personal details are limited to those that were entered to run the enquiry.

VisaView does not show the status of visa applications that INZ has not yet decided, or travel movements.

Confirming an applicant’s identity

VisaView does not confirm an individual’s identity. It is important to be confident that the person applying to study at your institution is the person named in the visa. We recommend that wherever possible, you confirm the identity of the person face to face, using original photo identification.
