Can I be offered employment without a valid work visa?

An employer can offer a job to a potential employee on the condition they gain the legal right to work in New Zealand. This type of condition is similar to other pre-employment conditions such as police clearance or drug testing.

If you are offered employment by a New Zealand employer, you may be able to apply for a work visa based on the offer of employment. You can assess the work visa options which may be available to you on our website.

Work in New Zealand

You cannot start working until you have the legal right to do so. This includes holding a visa which allows you to work in New Zealand.

You and your employee should both be aware of how long it will take to process the application.
