Can I be offered employment without a valid work visa?

There is no legislation that prohibits an employer from offering a job to a potential employee who does not have a work visa.

The employer is able to make the offer of employment conditional on the potential employee providing evidence that they have the legal right to work in New Zealand. This means the employment will only begin once the potential employee obtains a work visa.

This type of condition is similar to other pre-employment conditions such as police clearance, drug testing, and so on.

If you are offered employment by a New Zealand employer, you can apply for a work visa with the offer of employment.
