Steps to apply for a Returning Resident’s Visa

Follow these steps if you wish to apply for a Returning Resident’s Visa.

To help you make sure you have everything you need to apply, please print out our checklist.

 

Note: If you hold a resident permit, but you are a person who would otherwise be prohibited for entry (for instance, because you would be subject to travel sanctions), you may only be eligible for a 14-day Returning Resident’s Visa. If you think this might apply to you, you should contact your nearest branch of Immigration New Zealand to discuss your situation. 

 

Step 1

Complete the Application for Returning Residents Visa form (NZIS 1004) PDF available from New Zealand Immigration offices in New Zealand and overseas.

 

Step 2

Along with your completed (and signed) application form you will need to provide:

 

If you qualify for an indefinite Returning Resident’s Visa:

If you qualify for a 12 month Returning Resident’s Visa:

  • evidence that you have either held a residence permit for the required period or you have taxpayer status in New Zealand.

 

Step 3

You will also have to provide:

  • evidence of your residence status
  • the application fee
  • a passport, valid until at least 3 months past the date you plan to return to New Zealand, for each person included in your application.

 

Step 4

If you are currently in New Zealand, your application must be sent to your nearest Immigration New Zealand branch.
