W3.10 Fiancé(e)s of New Zealand citizens or residents (26/07/1999)
  1. Fiancé(e)s of New Zealand citizens or residents who do not qualify for a work visa in their own right and who are seeking entry to New Zealand to marry, may be issued with a work visa authorising a permit current for a maximum of 9 months, whether they are applying from overseas or within New Zealand.
  2. The New Zealand citizen or resident fiancé(e) must:
    1. be intending to be in New Zealand for the same period of time applied for by the applicant, and
    2. support the application.
  3. Applicants whose initial permit is current for less than 9 months:
    1. must apply to an office of the NZIS for a further permit before their initial permit expires, and
    2. are eligible only for a maximum stay of 9 months from the date of arrival, unless they apply for residence after their marriage.

W3.10.1 Evidential requirements for fiancé(e)s of New Zealand citizens or residents

Visa and immigration officers must satisfy themselves (if necessary by interview) that:

  1. the applicant has provided evidence of their fiancé(e)'s New Zealand citizenship or residence status; and
  2. marriage is intended within 9 months of arrival; and
  3. the applicant has provided evidence of their New Zealand fiancé(e)'s support in writing.

    Note: The applicant does not require an outward ticket if the New Zealand fiancé(e) formally sponsors the applicant by guaranteeing in writing the applicant's repatriation.
