A7.1 Objectives of the Privacy Act 1993

The objectives of the Privacy Act 1993 include:

  1. promoting and protecting individual privacy .
  2. establishing principles for collecting, using, and disclosing information about individuals; and
  3. establishing principles for allowing each individual access to information about them that is held by public and private sector agencies; and
  4. providing for the appointment of a Privacy Commissioner to investigate complaints about interferences with individual privacy.
