F4.25 Sponsorship requirements for the Parent Category (to 07/10/2019)

Note: The instructions in this section cease to be effective from 07 October 2019

In order to gain residence under the Parent Category, applicants must be sponsored by an adult child (see F4.5.10) who:

  1. meets the requirements to be an acceptable sponsor as set out at R4.5, including being:
    1. ordinarily resident in New Zealand; and
    2. a New Zealand citizen and/or the holder of a New Zealand residence class visa for at least three years immediately preceding the date the application they wish to sponsor is made; and
  2. agrees to meet the undertakings set out at R4.10 for the first ten years of the applicant’s stay in New Zealand as a resident.

Note: For the purposes of F4.25, a person is considered to be ‘ordinarily resident’ in New Zealand where an immigration officer is satisfied that New Zealand is their primary place of established residence.
