SM7.1 Aim and intent

  1. The aim of providing points for skilled work experience is to recognise the importance of skills and experience gained through previous employment that:
    1. are readily transferable; and
    2. will enable migrants to obtain skilled employment in New Zealand; and
    3. will enhance migrants' ability to contribute to New Zealand economically and socially.
  2. Bonus points are available for skilled work experience in New Zealand to recognise that such experience enhances understanding of the New Zealand labour market, the ability to gain skilled employment and to achieve positive settlement outcomes.
  3. Bonus points are available for work experience in an area of absolute skills shortage to ensure that those skilled migrants who can contribute significantly to areas of skill shortage in New Zealand are given recognition for that potential specific contribution.
