WI2.160 United Kingdom Working Holiday Scheme
- This scheme is available to 15,000 young citizens of the United Kingdom, aged 18 to 35 inclusive, annually.
- To be eligible for a work visa under this scheme, applicants must:
- be British citizens, ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom or the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man; and
- have a minimum of NZ$350 per month available funds for their maintenance during the period of stay in New Zealand; and
- meet the requirements at WI2.1.1(b) and (d).
- Successful applicants may be granted a work visa with the following conditions:
- if the applicant is outside New Zealand, first entry to New Zealand must be made within 12 months of the visa being granted, and the visa will allow work and multiple entries to New Zealand for up to a maximum of 36 months from first arrival; or
- if the applicant is in New Zealand, the visa will allow work and multiple entries to New Zealand for up to a maximum of 36 months.
- Applicants under this scheme must lodge their application in the prescribed manner (E4.50).
- Applicants under this working holiday scheme may apply for a visa with a duration of between 12 and 36 months. If a person applies for a visa that is less than the full available duration of 36 months in the first instance, then they may apply for a further visa up to their maximum entitlement of 36 months from the date of first arrival (or date the first working holiday visa was granted if they applied from within New Zealand), subject to meeting criteria under WI2.160.1 below.
- Despite the requirements at E7.10(a), applications submitted prior to 1 July 2023 can be determined in accordance with the current instructions.
WI2.160.1 Further visa requirements
To be eligible for a further work visa under this scheme in terms of WI2.160(e) above, applicants must:
- be in New Zealand on:
- a valid work visa granted under the United Kingdom Working Holiday Scheme at the time of application for a further visa; or
- a Working Holiday Visa as a UK citizen granted by Ministerial Special Direction on 3 March 2022 or on 20 October 2022; and
- apply in the prescribed manner using a paper form (E4.50.1); and
- meet all the requirements of WI2.1.1, except (b)(ii) and (ix); and
- provide evidence of having a minimum of NZ$350 per month available funds for their maintenance for the remainder of the period of stay.
