A8.1 Objectives of the Official Information Act 1982

Official Information Act 1982 s 4

The objectives of the Official Information Act 1982 are:

  1. to increase public access to official information to
    1. enable more effective participation in the making of laws and policies, and
    2. promote the accountability of Ministers and officials.
  2. to give persons access to official information about them; and
  3. at the same time to protect the public interest and safeguard personal privacy.

    Note: Individuals (live natural persons) who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents or are in New Zealand request personal information about themselves under the Privacy Act. They may authorise an agent to receive the information on their behalf.
