G2.30.1 Effect of occupational registration on eligibility for points

The requirement for occupational registration to undertake the occupations listed above in New Zealand can affect eligibility for points for qualifications and offers of employment.

G2.30.5 Effect on points for qualifications

  1. This section applies to principal applicants claiming points for a qualification that is required for employment in one of the occupations listed in G2.30 above. (If it is unclear, from the qualification document itself, whether the qualification is required for employment in one of these occupations, immigration and visa officers should seek advice from the issuing institution as to whether the main purpose of the qualification is to enable a person to be employed in one of the listed occupations.)
  2. Such principal applicants may obtain points for that qualification only if they:
    1. produce evidence of full registration in that occupation in New Zealand (if full registration is required to practise in New Zealand), or provisional registration (if only provisional registration is required to practise in New Zealand) see Note below; or
    2. have an offer of employment (for which points have been awarded) in an occupation that does not require registration and is assessed as relevant (see G4.15.5) to the qualification for which points are claimed; or
    3. are eligible to claim points for post-qualification work experience (see G4.1 - G4.1.10) in an occupation for which registration is not required in New Zealand, and were employed in that occupation for the same or a greater period of time than in an occupation for which registration is required by law in New Zealand.

Note: For teachers, 'provisional' registration includes both 'provisional' and 'subject to confirmation' registration. For medical practitioners, 'probationary' registration is considered to be 'provisional' registration.

G2.30.10 Effect on points for offers of employment

Principal applicants whose points for qualifications are affected by registration requirements will only obtain points for an offer of employment if they:

  1. produce evidence of full or provisional registration in New Zealand, if full or provisional registration is required by law in New Zealand to take up the offer; or
  2. have an offer of employment in an occupation that does not require registration and which is assessed as relevant to the qualification for which points are awarded.
