G4.15 Relevant offer of employment (19/09/2002)

  1. The number of points that may be awarded for a relevant offer of employment is dependent on the General Skills category passmark at the time the application is made. Points are awarded for relevant offers of employment as follows:

  2. Principal applicants must be awarded the number of points as specified in a. above for an offer of employment in New Zealand if that offer is:
    1. assessed as relevant to the qualification or work experience for which points have been or may be awarded, and
    2. for ongoing employment (see G4.15.15 below) with a single employer, or
    3. for one or more contracts totalling at least 6 months, if the principal applicant has provided evidence of having had at least two years of contract work, and
    4. for full-time employment (see G4.15.20 below), and
    5. current at the time of assessing the application and at the time of issue of the visa and/or grant of the permit (see G4.30), and
    6. genuine, and
    7. for a position that is paid by salary or wages (positions of self-employment, payment by commission and/or retainer are not acceptable), and
    8. accompanied by evidence of full or provisional registration, if full or provisional registration is required by law to take up the offer, and
    9. compliant with all relevant employment law in force in New Zealand.

      Note: Compliance with relevant New Zealand employment law includes but is not limited to:
      ~ a written employment agreement that contains the necessary statutory specified terms and conditions
      ~ paying employees no less than the appropriate adult or youth minimum wage
      ~ meeting holiday and special leave requirements or other minimum statutory criteria
      ~ meeting occupational safety and health obligations.

G4.15.5 Relevance of job offer to qualification

An offer of employment is assessed as relevant to a qualification if a visa or immigration officer is satisfied that:

  1. The major subject area of the qualification for which points have been awarded is directly applicable to the employment offered, or
  2. The offer of employment is in an occupation for which a core requirement is a qualification at the academic, trade or technical level of the qualification for which points have been awarded.

G4.15.10 Relevance of job offer to work experience

An offer of employment is assessed as relevant to work experience if a visa or immigration officer is satisfied that:

  1. the work experience for which points have been or may be awarded is directly applicable to the employment offered; and
  2. the offer of employment could not reasonably have been made if the applicant did not have that work experience.

G4.15.15 Definition of 'ongoing employment'

Employment is ongoing if it is:

  1. permanent, or
  2. indefinite, or
  3. for a stated term of at least 12 months with an option for the employee of further terms.

G4.15.20 Definition of 'full-time employment'

Employment is full-time if it amounts to, on average, at least 30 hours per week.
