This visa is for highly skilled young people who want to live and work in New Zealand long-term. To apply, you’ll need to have the right qualifications, and genuinely intend to look for skilled employment once in New Zealand. If you’re able to find long-term skilled employment, you may be able to apply for residence under the Skilled Migrant Category.

If you are a citizen of China and you submit a paper application form in China, you must also complete a supplementary form.

Health

You must be in good health

When you apply online, you must answer questions about your health.

After you apply online, you will be asked to provide a chest x-ray and a medical examination as proof of your good health.

Getting an x-ray or medical examination

You must provide a chest x-ray completed in the last 3 months, even if you've provided one to us previously, if:

  • you have spent 6 consecutive months in China since the last x-ray certificate was issued, and
  • you are now coming to NZ for more than 6 months.

Character

You must be of good character

When you apply online, you must answer questions about your character.

After you apply online, you will be asked to provide Police Certificates from:

  • your country of citizenship
  • any country in which you’ve lived for five or more years (whether on one visit or intermittently) since attaining the age of 17 years.

Skilled employment

You must genuinely intend to find long-term skilled employment in New Zealand

When you apply online, you may be asked to explain your reasons for applying for a Silver Fern Work visa, which should include your intention to find skilled employment.

Age

You must be 20 - 35

We’ll use your passport details to confirm your age.

Location

You must be living outside of New Zealand when you apply

Any documents that prove where you’re living. Examples include:

  • letters sent to your home address
  • references from your employer.

Qualifications

You must have a recognised qualification that’s equivalent to a New Zealand bachelor’s degree (or higher) or a trade certificate

Your recognised qualification must be either:

  • a qualification that’s equivalent to a New Zealand bachelor’s degree (level 7 ) or higher qualification
  • a trade qualification that’s equivalent to a National Certificate (Level 4) or a New Zealand Certificate (Level 4) and is relevant to an occupation on Part B or C of our ‘List of Skilled Occupations’.

Work experience

If you’re trade qualified, you must have at least 2 years’ work experience

For us to recognise your work experience, all of the following must apply:

  • it’s relevant to your trade qualification
  • you got it in a comparable labour market
  • you got your work experience in a country where you had the legal right to work
  • you got it after you completed your qualification.

Evidence can include employment records or references detailing your work experience, including:

  • the work that you did
  • the dates you did the work
  • how many hours a week you worked (on average)
  • your employer’s contact details.

Work experience is calculated on a 30 hour week. For each week you work 30 hours, you can claim one week of work experience.

If you work more than 30 hours a week, you can still only claim one week of work experience for your hours.

If you work less than 30 hours a week, you can claim your work experience on a proportional basis. For example, if you worked for 15 hours a week for 4 years, you can claim 2 years of work experience.

You may need New Zealand registration to work in your occupation in New Zealand

If registration is required to work in your occupation in New Zealand, you must provide either:

  • a certified copy of your full or provisional New Zealand registration
  • confirmation from the appropriate registration body that you’re eligible for New Zealand registration.

Funds

You must have enough money to live on while you’re in New Zealand

After you apply online, we may ask for evidence you have at least NZ $4,200 to live on. Evidence may include:

  • bank statements
  • credit card statements
  • bank drafts
  • travellers’ cheques.

Onward travel

You must have a ticket to leave New Zealand or enough money to buy one

After you apply online, you may be asked for evidence that you have the means to leave New Zealand, which may include:

  • a travel ticket
  • documents that show you have enough money to buy a travel ticket, eg bank or credit card statements
  • confirmed travel bookings.

English language

You must be able to speak English

After you apply online, you’ll be asked to provide one of the following:

  • An acceptable English language test result.
  • Evidence you’re a citizen of Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA), and you have spent at least five years working or studying in those countries, or in Australia or New Zealand.
  • Evidence you have a recognised qualification that’s comparable to a New Zealand level 7 bachelor’s degree, which you gained in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or the USA. You must have also studied for at least two years in any of those countries to get that qualification.
  • Evidence you have a recognised qualification that’s comparable to a postgraduate New Zealand qualification, which you gained in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or the USA. You must have also studied for at least one year in any of those countries to get that qualification.

Acceptable English language test results

English language test results must be no more than 2 years old.

Regardless of the other evidence you provide, if you don’t provide an acceptable English language test result, we may ask for one as evidence you meet the English language requirements.

You can’t apply for this visa, if we’ve already approved an earlier application for you to have a Silver Fern Job Search Work Visa. This applies even if you didn’t use that visa.

Conditions

Conditions

These are the conditions that you must meet.

Entry permission

You must apply for entry permission when you arrive in New Zealand. You can do this by completing an arrival card, which you are given on the way to New Zealand.

Arriving in New Zealand

You can be refused entry permission if:

  • you do not meet our character requirements
  • your circumstances have changed since you were granted a visa
  • you refuse to let us take your photo or to provide us with your fingerprints or an iris scan, if asked for them
  • you are unable to provide evidence of any onward travel or funds required by the conditions of your visa.

If you are refused entry to New Zealand

Before you travel to New Zealand

Travel

You must come to New Zealand within 6 months.

You can travel in and out of New Zealand until your visa expires.

Visa expiry dates are printed on a visa label or included in a visa letter.

Funds

You must have enough money to live on while in New Zealand.

If your visa label or letter doesn’t say ‘Financial evidence not required’ or ‘The holder of this visa is sponsored’, we may ask for evidence of funds when you arrive in New Zealand.

Onward travel

You must have the means to leave New Zealand at all times during your stay.

You may be asked for evidence of your travel arrangements when you check in or arrive in New Zealand.  If you’re not required to provide evidence, we’ll record it in your visa label or visa letter.

Study

You can study for up to 3 months.

Work

You can work for any employer in any occupation in New Zealand.

Visa expiry

You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.
