Things to note

  • You can only apply for this visa once, unless you complete a second higher qualification that is either a New Zealand bachelor's degree or post-graduate qualification, which you spend at least 30 weeks in New Zealand studying for.
  • You can’t provide commercial sexual services, or operate or invest in a business that does.
  • You can't include a partner or dependent children in your visa application, but they can apply for visas based on their relationship to you.

Identity

You must provide proof of your identity

  • 2 acceptable photos if you use a paper application form or 1 photo if you apply online.
  • your passport or certificate of identity.

Acceptable photos

If you submit a paper application, you may provide your original passport, or a certified copy. However we highly recommend you provide your original passport. This will enable us to process your application faster and it may be needed to complete your application.

If you apply online, you must upload a copy of your passport when you apply. You may need to send your passport after you've applied.

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave New Zealand.

Please also provide your Kartu Keluarga.

If you’re not a French national, please also provide a copy of your carte d’assuré.

Please also provide a copy of your livret de famille.

Please also provide a copy of your Identity card.

You should also provide a copy of 

  • your Hukou (household registration book)
  • your identity card.

If you are a citizen of China submitting a paper application form in China, you must also provide a supplementary form for Chinese citizens.

Health

You must be in good health

You may need to have a chest x-ray and/or a medical examination as proof of your good health.

When you need an x-ray or medical examination

You must provide a chest x-ray completed in the last 3 months, even if you've provided one to us previously, if:

  • you have spent 6 consecutive months in China since the last x-ray certificate was issued, and
  • you are now coming to NZ for more than 6 months.

Character

You must be of good character

You may need to provide police certificates as proof of your good character.

If you're aged 17 and over and will stay in New Zealand for more than 24 months, you must provide police certificates from:

  • your country(s) of citizenship
  • any country(s) you've spent more than 5 years in since turning 17.

You don't need to provide police certificates if you have provided them to us with an earlier visa application, and they were issued in the previous 24 months.

Bona fide

You must genuinely intend to meet the conditions of your visa

When we assess if you’re bona fide, we’ll consider all of the information that:

  • you provide to support your application
  • we have about your personal circumstances and any previous applications.

You must have completed an acceptable qualification in New Zealand

You must provide either:

  • a copy of your acceptable qualification
  • a letter or academic transcript from your University or Polytechnic confirming you have completed your qualification.

Work visa application

You must apply in time

You must apply for a work visa no later than 3 months after the Student Visa expires, or 6 months if you were granted a visa to complete a doctorate.

We’ll check our records to make sure that you’re applying in time.

We’ll check your New Zealand qualification, to make sure the study completed was the same study your Student Visa was granted for.

You won’t be eligible to apply if you didn’t complete the qualification recorded on your Student Visa.

Funds

You must have enough money to live on while you’re in New Zealand

You must have at least NZ $4,200 for your stay. Evidence can include:

  • bank statements
  • credit card statements
  • bank drafts
  • travellers’ cheques.

Visa conditions

Visa conditions

If you are granted a visa, there are conditions that you must meet. These visa conditions are described below.

Entry permission

You must apply for entry permission when you arrive in New Zealand. You can do this by completing an arrival card, which you’ll be given on the way to New Zealand.

You can be refused entry permission if:

  • you don't meet our character requirements
  • your circumstances have changed since you were granted a visa
  • you refuse to let us take your photo or to provide us with your fingerprints or an iris scan, if asked for them.

Travelling to and arriving in New Zealand

Travel

If you want to travel in and out of New Zealand, you must have valid multiple entry travel conditions to return to New Zealand.

Your travel conditions will be explained on your visa label or visa letter.

Work

You can work in almost any job for any employer in New Zealand.

You can’t provide commercial sexual services or operate or invest in a business that does.

Study

You can study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period.

You may be able to do other study if it’s required by your employer as part of your employment.

Visa expiry

You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.

Visa expiry dates are printed on a visa label, or included in a visa letter.
