Working Holiday Visa medical requirements

If you’re applying for a Working Holiday Visa, you may need to provide a chest x-ray and/or medical certificate as proof of your good health.

Find out what evidence you need to provide by identifying your situation below. The medical information you need to provide is based on:

  • the maximum duration permitted under your country’s working holiday scheme
  • whether you are in New Zealand
  • whether you have spent time outside countries with a low incidence of TB
  • whether you have previously provided medical information with a visa application.

Countries with a low incidence of TB

You’re in New Zealand when you apply for a Working Holiday Visa

You’ll need to provide a chest x-ray certificate and a general medical certificate if you are in New Zealand and applying for a Working Holiday Visa.

The only exceptions are those applying for Working Holiday Visas under the Austria, Malaysia or Singapore schemes – see further details below.

You’re outside New Zealand when you apply for a Working Holiday Visa

If your country’s working holiday scheme permits a total stay of 23 months (currently available to citizens of the UK and Canada), you must provide a chest x-ray certificate and general medical certificate.

If your country’s working holiday scheme permits a total stay of up to 12 months, you must provide a chest x-ray certificate if you have spent more than 3 months in the last 5 years outside of a country with a low incidence of TB.

If you have only spent time in countries that have a low incidence of TB, you do not need to provide a chest x-ray or general medical certificate.

You’re applying under the Austria, Malaysia, or Singapore working holiday scheme

If you’re outside of New Zealand and applying for a Austria, Malaysia or Singapore Working Holiday Visa you do not need to provide a chest x-ray certificate or a general medical certificate.

If you’re in New Zealand and have been here for less than 6 months, you must provide a chest x-ray certificate if you are applying for a Malaysia or Singapore Working Holiday Visa.

If you’re in New Zealand and have been here for more than 6 months, you must provide a chest x-ray certificate and general medical certificate.

Evidence of your chest x-ray or medical examination

When you’ve had your chest x-ray or medical examination, you’ll need to provide evidence you’ve done so.

This can be done by providing us with an eMedical reference number, or sending us your chest x-ray certificate or medical certificate. If medical evidence is required, you must provide this to us within 15 days of your visa application.

When not to get a medical examination

If you sent us a medical certificate with an earlier visa application, you don’t need to have another medical examination unless one of the following applies:

  • it’s been more than 3 years since you had the last one
  • you weren’t assessed as having an acceptable standard of health at the time
  • we need a different kind of medical certificate than the one you provided.
