Eligible to apply online

Applying online is often faster and less expensive than applying manually. You'll need to be applying for a visa available online, have a credit card ready and your documents saved electronically.

Most work, student and visitor visas can be applied for online. Applying online is often faster and less expensive than sending in a paper application form. If you apply online you may be eligible for an eVisa, and may not need to send us your passport.
eVisas

If you apply online, any supporting evidence, like a copy of your passport, will need to be available in an electronic file.

Visiting

You should apply online for a visitor visa if you:

  • are applying as an individual
  • have access to a Visa, MasterCard or UnionPay Card, or are waived from paying the fee.

You should use a paper application form if you’re applying:

  • with your partner or family
  • based on your partnership with a New Zealander or another visa holder
  • as the dependent child of a New Zealand or another visa holder
  • as a group (including Chinese ADS groups)
  • as the guardian of a student
  • under the Temporary Retirement Category
  • on humanitarian grounds
  • to change the conditions of your existing visa
  • or if you don’t have access to a Visa, MasterCard or UnionPay Card.

Studying

You should apply online for a student visa if you:

  • are applying as a:
    • fee paying student (including as a pathways student)
    • exchange student
    • scholarship student
  • have access to a Visa, MasterCard or UnionPay Card, or are waived from paying the fee.

You should use a paper application form if you’re applying:

  • as the dependent child of a worker or student
  • on humanitarian grounds
  • to change the conditions of your existing visa
  • or if you don’t have access to a Visa, MasterCard or UnionPay Card.

Working

The following work visas can be applied for online

  • Long Term Skill Shortage List
  • Post-Study Work Visa – Open
  • Post-Study Work Visa – Employer Assisted
  • Religious Worker
  • Specific Purpose
  • Student and Trainee
  • Talent  (Accredited Employer)
  • Talent (Arts, Culture, Sports)
  • Working Holiday

To apply online you must also have access to a Visa, MasterCard or UnionPay Card or be waived from paying the fee. 

You should use a paper application form if you’re applying:

  • for a work visa based on partnership with a New Zealander or another visa holder
  • on humanitarian grounds (for example as  refugee claimant)
  • to change the conditions of your existing visa
  • or if you don’t have access to a Visa, MasterCard or UnionPay Card.
