With this visa you can
- Start your pathway to residence in New Zealand by working for up to 30 months in an occupation for which there is a shortage of New Zealanders available.
- Apply for residence after 2 years of working in an occupation on our Long Term Skill Shortage List.
Things to note
- You can’t include a partner or dependent children in your work visa application, but they can apply for visas based on their relationship to you.
The application process
1 Gather your documents
Prepare and gather all your documentation you need for this visa.
2 Submit your application
You can apply either online or using a paper form.
You can check our Office and fees finder for how much you’ll need to pay. If you choose to use a paper form, you can also check where to send your application.
We’ll also need your employer to complete a Supplementary Form.
3 Wait for a visa decision
We’ll process your application as soon as we can.
Most online applications are processed within 25 days, and most paper applications within 23 days, but it can take longer in some situations.

4 You can apply for a Resident visa
Once you’ve held your Long Term Skill Shortage List Work Visa for 24 months you can apply for residence under the Long Term Skill Shortage List Resident Visa category.
