Information about Crew joining a Ship or Plane Visitor Visa

Crew members can come to New Zealand to join a vessel or aircraft leaving for another country. You must provide fully documented evidence of your engagement as a crew member in New Zealand. During your stay, you’ll need enough money to support yourself and everyone included in your application.

You can

  • Come to New Zealand to join a vessel or aircraft leaving for another country.
  • Bring your partner, and dependent children 19 and under with you – you’ll need to include them in your visa application.

Things to note

  • You don’t need to apply for a Visitor Visa if you’re working as a crew member on a commercial flight travelling to New Zealand, and you’ll be in New Zealand for less than 7 days.
  • You don’t need to apply for a Visitor Visa if you're travelling to New Zealand as a crew member on a cruise or cargo ship, and you’ll be in New Zealand for less than 28 days.
  • If you won't be a working crew member when you travel to New Zealand, you must apply for a Visitor Visa before you travel - unless you’re from a visa waiver country.
