With this visa you can
  • Live, work and study in New Zealand.
  • Include your partner, and dependent children aged 24 and under, in your residence application.
Things to note
  • This pilot visa is available to mandated refugees who have been nominated by an approved community organisation or identified by UNHCR.
  • You must complete an expression of interest and be invited to apply before making a visa application.
  • You must be sponsored by an approved community organisation sponsor or be identified by the UNHCR as an eligible applicant.
  • Community sponsored refugee applicants don’t have to pay an immigration levy or visa application fee.

You do not have to pay for the medical examination.

You must provide a police certificate from:

  • each country in which you have lived for 12 months or more during the past 10 years.

You do not have to provide a police certificate from your home country if any of the following apply:

  • you have a well-founded fear of approaching the authorities in your home country
  • the authorities in your home country do not generally provide police certificates
  • we determine it is unsafe for you to approach the authorities in your home country.

Tips

Police certificates must be less than 6 months old at the time you apply.

We check your identity documents — for example, your passport — to confirm your age.

You will need to complete an online English language assessment. INZ will advise you on how to complete this.

You’ll need to show you can read, understand and respond to basic questions in English.

You’ll need to show us that you have either work experience or tertiary qualifications that meet our requirements.

Work experience is acceptable if you have at least three years’ experience in the same occupation, or the same or related sector.

A tertiary qualification is acceptable if it requires at least two years’ study.

Tips

We may ask you to make a signed declaration if you do not have sufficient documentation.

You should provide a copy of your UNHCR Resettlement Registration Form or UNHCR registration card.

We’ll check our records to confirm that you are supported by an approved community organisation sponsor.

 

If you are nominated by an approved community organisation or identified by the UNHCR, you’ll be asked to express interest in applying under this category.

If you express interest, we’ll consider your request and grant you an invitation to apply if we think you have a credible chance of meeting the requirements.

Tips
  • You’ll complete an expression with the support of Host Aotearoa New Zealand or your approved community organisation.
  • An invitation to apply is not a guarantee that you will be granted a visa.
  • If you’re invited to apply, you’ll have four months to make a visa application.

You must not be eligible to be sponsored for residence under any other family category or the Refugee Family Support Category.

To include your partner and/or dependent children in your residence application, you must demonstrate:

  • your relationship with your partner and children meet our requirements
  • that your partner and children meet health and character requirements
  • that there are no significant barriers to the ability of any of your family settling in New Zealand
  • that your partner and children are not eligible to be sponsored for residence under any family visa category or the Refugee Family Support Category.

The information below will help you understand the process, timeframes and costs involved in applying for this visa, so you can plan ahead and have the best chance of submitting a complete application.

Stage 1

You are nominated or referred

you are nominated by an approved community organisation or referred to us by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

You may be specifically identified by an approved community organisation, or referred to us by the UNHCR if an approved community organisation has decided not to specify the refugees it will sponsor in New Zealand.

You express your interest

If you are nominated by an approved community organisation or referred to us by the UNHCR, you will be given an expression of interest form to complete when you approach the UNHCR to complete a Resettlement Registration Form. The UNHCR will pass your expression of interest on to INZ.

If you are successful, we invite you to apply for residence.

You apply for residence

If you are invited to apply, we give you a residence application form to complete. We then interview you when we conduct our next selection mission.

After the interview We assess your English language capability and arrange health checks for you and your family.

Your application must be made within four months of you being invited to apply.

We make a decision

We then make a decision on your application. We be in touch if we need any further information.

If you are approved, we arrange travel to New Zealand for you and your family.

These are the conditions that you must meet once you have your visa.

Keep your visa in a valid passport

If you want to travel, your visa must be in a valid passport.

If your passport expires, you must apply to transfer your visa to a new passport before you can travel.

To transfer your visa, you must:

  • send us your old and new passports
  • complete an ‘Application for Transfer or Confirmation of a Visa’
  • pay a transfer fee.
