What is NZQA and how do I contact them?

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) is the government agency responsible for New Zealand qualifications, and for assessing qualifications gained overseas to determine the equivalent level in New Zealand terms.

For a qualification that was gained at an overseas tertiary institution to be eligible for points under the Skilled Migrant category, it must be recognised through one of the following:

  • your qualification is included on our List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment, or
  • you have full or provisional registration and your qualification has been assessed by a New Zealand organisation authorised by law to issue occupational registration as being comparable to a New Zealand qualification on the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment

Occupational Registration

If your qualification does not meet either of the points above, you must approach the NZQA to have your qualification assessed before submitting your Expression of Interest under the Skilled Migrant category.
