Enquiring about a New Zealander
You can use VisaView to confirm New Zealand passport details. A valid New Zealand passport is proof that the holder is a New Zealand citizen and has the right to work in New Zealand.
To use this service your employer account must be confirmed and you must have an agreement with the Department of Internal Affairs. Click on the NZ Passport Enquiry link for more details.
If you do not have access to this service, you may sight a physical passport.
If your prospective employee does not have a New Zealand passport, you may sight photo identification together with documentary evidence of New Zealand citizenship such as:
- a New Zealand birth certificate, or
- a New Zealand citizenship certificate.
New Zealand birth certificates issued after 1 January 2006 must confirm citizenship to be acceptable.

Enquiring about an Australian
Australian citizens who are granted entry to New Zealand are issued with a resident visa when they arrive. This entitles them to work for any employer in New Zealand in any occupation.
Australian citizenship cannot be checked through VisaView. We recommend that you sight an Australian passport.
