Your partner's English language ability

Information to help you answer the questions in this section.

What you need to have ready to complete this section:

A recent test report issued by an accepted English language test provider (test results must be no more than 2 years old at the time your application is lodged), if your partner needs to show they meet the minimum standard of English in this way. These are:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT)
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)
  • Cambridge English B2 First (FCE) or B2 First for Schools (FCE for Schools)
  • Occupational English Test (OET)

Question 1

You’ll need to indicate how your partner meets the minimum standard of English by selecting one of the options in this question.

Skilled Migrant Category English requirements

You will only be able to claim points for your partner’s skilled employment or recognised qualifications if they meet the English language requirements for principal applicants.

Note that this means if they have a test report from an accepted English language test provider, they must have achieved a result that is acceptable for the principal applicant, in order to claim these points.

Acceptable English language test results

Questions 2 and 3

You must answer both questions if your partner has an acceptable English language test result showing that they meet the minimum standard of English.

If your partner doesn’t meet the minimum standard, you will still be able to submit your Expression of Interest.

However, your partner must pre-purchase English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) tuition if they do not meet the minimum standard of English. They will need to attend English language classes once they get to New Zealand.
