Interim visas

If you have an employee who is applying for a further work visa then they may be granted an interim visa that allows them to stay in New Zealand lawfully while their application is processed. They may be eligible to continue working on an interim visa if the job is in the same position, for the same employer and in the same location as their current visa.

As part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, holders of interim visas with an expiry date of 2 April to 9 July 2020 (inclusive) who were in New Zealand on 2 April 2020 had their visas extended to 25 September 2020.

Immigration New Zealand will make a decision on whether to grant a person an interim visa close to the day their current visa expires and will inform them by email or letter. A person cannot apply for an interim visa and there is no guarantee that one will be granted. There are also no fees or forms.

The interim visa will start the day after your employee’s current visa expires.

The interim visa will expire:

  • if we approve your employee’s application and grant a visa, or
  • 21 days after the application is declined, or withdrawn, or
  • after 6 months, if no decision has been made in 6 months.
