Future Dated Visas

This advice is reiterated from previous advice to staff.
The Application Management System (AMS) allows for temporary entry class visas to be approved with a start date in the future. This allows Immigration New Zealand to approve a visa that does not start immediately, and can become active at a date in the future that may be more appropriate to the applicant’s circumstances.

Examples of when to grant a limited visa with a future start date

  • An Essential Skills work visa holder is applying for a further work visa as they have obtained a new job. However, they are required to work out the notice period in their current employment before they can start in the new position/for the new employer.
  • A group of Recognised Seasonal Employer workers are starting work on 30 January, but the applications are submitted prior to Christmas. Visas can be approved with a future start date of 16 January in compliance with instructions at WH1.15.20.a, which allows arrive in New Zealand no earlier than 14 days in advance of the start of the work.
