Immigration New Zealand has been working with representatives from the beekeeping industry to ensure greater consistency when assessing applications for beekeepers under the ANZSCO code 121311 APIARIST. As a result, the following resources have been made available to assist immigration officers when assessing applications for beekeepers:

  • Representatives from the beekeeping industry have provided a list of tasks as they apply to the ANZCO code.
  • The Immigration and Protection Tribunal has recently released a decision on a residence appeal where they discuss the role of beekeeper in relation to the ANZSCO code (IPT Appeal Number 203111).

Please keep in mind that the ANZSCO code for Beekeepers (121311) is a subset of the Unit Group 1213 Livestock Farmers, which includes a range of livestock such as deer and cattle, therefore some of the tasks listed will not be relevant to beekeepers.

Note: Depending on the business in which beekeepers are employed, they may be dedicated to beekeeping work in the field, or may undertake operational planning, control and administrative duties in addition to their core beekeeping duties. Any lack of overall administrative/business operations functions demonstrated in their day-to-day job descriptions may reflect the business structure of their employer, rather than any lack of beekeeping skill or expertise on their part. For example, larger honey industry employers may have ‘Operations Managers’ covering the tasks that are defined as “beekeeper” tasks in the ANSZCO definitions. In these cases, beekeepers can be dedicated to their hive work in the field. The core skills of beekeeping are in working with hives.
