Processing Expired Medical Certificates

This item provides details on actions by staff when processing expired medical certificates and should be used in conjunction with the recent advice given on 24 March 2016.

Officers should not enter medical certificates over 3 months old into AMS. If the lodgement requirement for a valid medical certificate is waived, they should enter into AMS notes that an expired medical certificate was received and the date it expired.

The Immigration Officer (IO) can then decide whether to request a new medical certificate or approve the application as an Exception to Instructions (ETI), if they intend to approve the application.

If approving as an ETI, this should be recorded in the file summary so that it is clear to officers assessing any future applications that there is no current medical certificate. IOs should inform clients that their application has been approved as an ETI and that a valid medical certificate must be provided with the next visa application.
