Aviation Student Instructions – U6.35.5

Specific instructions for aviation students were introduced (U6.35.5) in August 2014 allowing visas for the length of the programme of study. This advice provides clarification of the requirement to provide evidence showing that the first term of tuition fees has been paid.

U6.35.5 Aviation students

Aviation students may be granted a student visa for the length of their programme of study if they have:

  • An offer of place from a training institute that is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority and a signatory to the Ministry of Education’s Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students; and
  • Evidence of support from the training provider for INZ to grant a visa for the length of the programme of study; and
  • Evidence that the full first term of tuition fees have been paid (unless the applicant is a trainee with, and has provided a guarantee, from Air New Zealand).

Of particular importance is the instruction regarding tuition fees, as aviation students who meet the requirements under U6.35.5 are only required to show evidence that the full first term of tuition fees has been paid. In instances where the programme does not operate in terms or have breaks then 25% of the full programme fees is considered acceptable and would meet instructions.

As per the ‘Note’ included with instruction at U3.10 (a) for applications processed outside New Zealand, evidence of payment is not required until after the application has been approved in principle. As noted above, this must be the first term of tuition fee (or 25% of the total course fee, whichever is applicable).
