Dependent Children of NZ Aid Programme (NZAP) Students – Evidence of Funds

There has been uncertainty regarding what is required to demonstrate evidence of funds for dependent children of NZ Aid Programme (NZAP) students. NZAP does not provide funding for dependent children and partners so it is important that they meet the relevant funds requirements under immigration instructions. Clarification of the relevant immigration instructions is included below.

Partner of the NZAP student has a work visa

Dependent children of work visa holders may be granted a student visa under U8.20 and are regarded as domestic students. Evidence of funds can be waived under U8.20 (d).

Guarantees of accommodation and/or maintenance for dependent children may be waived provided this is covered by the income of the work visa holder parent or by evidence of funds or guarantees submitted with the work visa application of the parent (see W2.15).

Immigration Officers should consider that partners of NZAP students who have obtained a work visa under WF4.5 must have NZ$4200 available for maintenance.

NZAP student does not have a partner or the partner does not have a work visa

Dependent children of NZAP students may be granted a student visa under U8.25 and are regarded as domestic students. However, dependent children under this category must have sufficient funds for maintenance as outlined in U3.20. If the dependent child will be studying in New Zealand for 36 weeks or longer and does not have sponsorship or a financial undertaking then they must have $15,000 per year available to maintain themselves.

Visiting partners and children

Partners and children who intend to visit New Zealand may be granted visitor visas provided they meet usual visitor visa requirements including funds requirements as outlined in V2.20. If they do not have a sponsor then evidence of $1000 per month or $400 per month if accommodation has been prepaid is required.
