Medical referrals when the medical has been destroyed

In some instances an applicant’s medical certificate needs to be referred to the Medical Assessor (MA), however, the medical certificate has been destroyed by INZ. In these instances we do not usually request a new medical certificate but, instead, refer the information we do have to the MA to obtain a medical opinion, if possible.

There have been some recent cases where these types of referrals have been sent directly to the Medical Documentation team. If these referrals go to the MA without a medical certificate, then they will be returned without an assessment.

Current

These instances are an exception to normal practice. When a client’s medical certificate needs to be referred and INZ has destroyed the medical certificate the information should be referred via email to Operations Support. This is to ensure that the MA’s are aware of what they are being sent and why a full medical certificate has not been provided.

The MAs are asked to assess the information that they are provided and, if able, provide an opinion of ASH or NOT ASH. If they cannot provide an opinion, then the applicant will need to obtain a new medical certificate and/or x-ray.

Action

In order to keep these medical referrals separate from normal medical referrals, please email referrals where the medical certificate has been destroyed to one of the Operations Support team mailboxes.

You must include the following information in the body of the email:

  • Date of when the medical certificate was destroyed (this does not include hard to find ones)
  • Client number
  • Application number
  • Clients age/gender/nationality
  • Application type
  • Intended period of stay

Details of the clients medical history (based on AMS notes) including the date of the medical certificate and x-ray (if applicable), further tests as requested by the initial MA, etc.

Attach any tests results that have been completed.
