V2.25 Outward travel

V2.25 outlines that applicants for a visitor visa are required to show evidence of onward travel arrangements. Evidence of onward travel includes but is not limited to:

  • Actual travel tickets out of New Zealand to a country which the person has right of entry to;
  • A visitor visa endorsed to show onward travel is met or waived;
  • Written confirmation from an airline or travel agency that onward travel has been booked and paid for.

A recent case has highlighted different interpretations of what can be used as evidence of onward travel arrangements when a person is travelling under the visa waiver scheme. In particular, whether evidence of sufficient funds to purchase onward tickets (in lieu of an actual ticket), is enough to meet V2.25.

INZ Border Operations has confirmed evidence of funds is not sufficient evidence to satisfy V2.25. Other types of acceptable evidence of onward travel arrangements are anything that demonstrates a confirmed departure from New Zealand, such as:

  • A letter from the skipper of a yacht confirming passage;
  • Tickets on a cruise liner;
  • Evidence of intended departure on a military craft;
  • Evidence of intended departure on a private aircraft.
