China Special Work Category

Find out about the China special work category.

Under the China Special Work Instructions for Chinese Chefs, there are only 200 places available at any one time. This means when a visa granted under this category expires, a place becomes available - this can happen at any time.

If there are no places available when your application arrives at an Immigration New Zealand office, an immigration officer will be in contact with you. However, please understand that once an application has been accepted by Immigration New Zealand, any request for a refund will be at the sole discretion of Immigration New Zealand.

What is the China Special Work category?

The China Special Work category is only available to citizens of the People’s Republic of China. The category is the result of commitments made in the China-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, signed in 2008. Visas are available for applicants who are qualified:

  • Chinese chefs
  • Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners (including nurses)
  • Mandarin teachers’ aides
  • Wushu martial arts coaches
  • Chinese tour guides

What are the benefits of the China Skilled Workers category?

Applying for a work visa under the China Special Work category is as simple as applying for any other New Zealand work visa. Additional benefits to those applying under the China Special Work category include:

  • No labour market test is required: Normally Immigration New Zealand (INZ) needs to check whether or not there are New Zealanders available to do the work offered. This test is not required for applications under the China Special Work category
  • Faster processing: Because INZ does not need to check whether New Zealanders are available a time-consuming step is removed from the application assessment process
  • Ability to transfer to other visa categories, including residence: Applicants who hold a visa granted under the China Special Work category have the option of applying for other visa types after this one. For example, you may consider applying for residence through the Skilled Migrant Category
  • Visa valid for up to three years: Visas issued under the China Special Work category can be valid for up to three years, depending on the length of your job offer. You can also apply for a further visa, valid for the balance of the three-year period if your initial China Special Work visa is issued for less than three years
  • There is no minimum English language requirement (except for those applying for a visa to work as a Chinese Tour Guide)

Who is eligible?

Visas are only available to citizens of the People’s Republic of China. To be eligible, you will need to meet the following:

  • Health and character requirements
