Arts festival and entertainment promoters

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) works in partnership with festival organisers and entertainment promoters. Becoming approved with INZ will help to facilitate visa applications for performers and accompanying crew.

Approved arts and music festivals

We work with arts and music festival organisers to simplify the visa application process. Performers and direct support staff participating in an ‘approved’ arts or music festival can come to New Zealand as visitors.

This means that performers and direct support staff can perform and work at the festival on a visitor visa without having to apply for a work visa. They will still need to meet all the requirements of a visitor visa.

To become approved, arts and music festival organisers must submit a proposal to INZ that contains:

  • evidence the festival has been established for at least 3 years, for example:
    • letters of support from local council, Creative New Zealand, New Zealand Music Commission
    • trust registration documents
    • council permits
    • event brochures
    • advertising
    • press cuttings
    • ticket sales (if applicable)
    • list of invited international performers/acts over previous three years
  • evidence the organiser intends to bring in at least 10 international performers/direct support staff, for example:
    • letters of invitation
    • future festival planning documents

The proposal should be scanned and emailed to:
festivalsandpromoters@mbie.govt.nz

The proposal may also be submitted to:

Approved Arts and Music Festival Approval
Operations Support, Visa Services
Immigration New Zealand
PO Box 1473
Wellington 6140

Organisers should allow at least 20 working days for their proposal to be considered. If granted, approval will be valid for 4 years.

Approved promoters

We also work with entertainment promoters to simplify the visa application process. Performers and direct support staff of short-term live entertainment acts promoted by an ‘approved promoter’ can enter New Zealand as visitors.

This means performers and direct support staff can perform and work here on a visitor visa without applying for a work visa. They will still need to meet all the requirements of a visitor visa.

To become approved, the promoter must submit a proposal to INZ that contains:

  • a cover letter and brief biography about themselves/the organisation as a music promoter
  • a list of all company or business names traded under (if applicable)
  • evidence the promoter has been established for at least 3 years, for example:
    • company office registration documentation
  • evidence of a credible record promoting international performers in New Zealand in the past 3 years, for example:
    • event brochures
    • advertising
    • press cuttings

The proposal should be scanned and emailed to:
festivalsandpromoters@mbie.govt.nz

If granted, approval will be valid for 4 years.
