Summer starts before take-off: Apply early for your Visitor Visa

If you are planning to visit New Zealand during the busy Christmas and New Year holiday period, now is the time to start thinking about your travel requirements.

Summer is one of Immigration New Zealand's (INZ) busiest times of the year, with increased numbers of people applying for visitor visas to spend time with family and friends, celebrate the festive season, attend special events, or enjoy everything New Zealand has to offer during the warmer months.

Last summer, INZ received around 284,000 visitor visa applications between September and March, demonstrating the high demand for travel to New Zealand during the peak holiday season.

If you are planning to arrive in New Zealand around Christmas, INZ recommends submitting your as soon as possible.

Higher application volumes can mean longer processing times, especially if an application is missing information or supporting documents. Applying early gives you the best chance of having your visa decided before you travel and helps you plan your trip with confidence.

Submitting a complete application can help avoid delays, so before you apply, make sure you:

• provide all required supporting documents
• upload a clear copy of your passport bio page
• ensure your photo meets INZ requirements
• check that your personal details match your passport exactly
• include English translations for any documents that are not in English
• provide information that supports the purpose of your visit.

Taking a few extra minutes to check your application before you submit it can make a real difference. Even small mistakes can slow down the assessment process, as we may need to request additional information before a decision can be made. In some cases, incomplete applications may be declined.

Travelling from Australia?

Some travellers may not need to apply for a visitor visa.

Eligible passport holders from China and Pacific Island Forum countries travelling to New Zealand from Australia may be able to travel using a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) instead, provided they hold an eligible Australian visa.
