Apply early and be ready: Tips for a smooth student visa application
Find out how applying for your student visa early can help you prepare for study in New Zealand.
We receive high volumes of student visa applications throughout the year. While processing times are regularly updated, demand can increase significantly ahead of major study intakes. If you leave your application too late, you risk not having your visa decided before you need to travel or begin your studies.

Apply at least 3 months before your course starts
To give yourself the best chance of starting your studies on time, we strongly recommend applying for your student visa at least 3 months before your course begins.
You can apply earlier if you have all the documents you need.
If you are applying from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, you should be particularly mindful of applying early. We receive significantly higher volumes of student visa applications from these countries, so it takes longer to process them, especially ahead of major student intakes.
Remember, if your visa has not been decided before your course start date, you may need to defer your studies and join a later intake. We do not prioritise processing for late applications, even when you have travel bookings. It is your responsibility to apply for a visa in good time.
This also applies to students travelling on short-term study programmes and people applying for Guardian Visas.
