Call for entries in the 2017 Best Plain English Turnaround Award

Immigration New Zealand is sponsoring a category in the 2017 WriteMark Plain English Awards.

If you have recently taken a difficult-to-understand piece of communication and rewritten it in easy-to-follow, plain, clear, direct English, you are invited to enter the Best Plain English Turnaround Award category in this year’s WriteMark Plain English Awards.

Created in 2006, the annual WriteMark Plain English Awards are intended to recognise plain English champions and to raise the bar for clear communication.

The Plain English Turnaround Award is supported by Immigration New Zealand, which has a long-term interest in ensuring that every New Zealander, regardless of country of origin, has access to clearly-expressed information.

“With more than a quarter of New Zealand’s population born abroad, not everyone understands English well,” says Judi Altinkaya, ‎National Manager, Migrant Settlement. “It’s important for people whose jobs involve communications to keep this in mind.”

In 2016, Immigration New Zealand published Keeping it Clear: Tips on providing information to an audience that is new to New Zealand.

Keeping it clear

The Best Plain English Turnaround Award is open to all forms of communication, whether online, in print or video.

To enter the award, visit the Plain English Awards website.

Entries close on 31 August, with the awards to be announced on at the Awards ceremony on 23 November at the Royal Society of New Zealand’s premises in Wellington.
