Helping study for children and adults on visitor visas Wednesday, 23 September 2020

Holders of visitor visas in New Zealand for longer than expected can now study for an extra 3 months, up to 6 months in a year.

The Minister of Immigration’s practical measure applies to both school-age children and adults studying short courses at tertiary education providers.

School-age children with a visitor visa valid on 11 September 2020 can now study in term 1 of a calendar year, even if they studied in term 4 of the previous year. If they meet the definition of domestic student as defined by the Ministry of Education, they will not need to pay international fees.

Visitor visa holders who wish to study for longer than 6 months must apply for a student visa or a variation of conditions for their current visa.

This measure does not apply to visitor visas granted after 11 September 2020. We are notifying eligible visa holders.
