Wellington businesses supporting new migrants showcased at Gold Awards launch Friday, 20 May 2016

Three Wellington businesses - Powershop, Commonsense Organics and the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research were named as recipients of the inaugural Immigration Gold Showcase at last night’s Wellington Gold Awards finalists announcement function.

Established in 1999, the Wellington Gold Awards celebrates the excellence and the enterprise of business in the Wellington Region. The Immigration Gold Showcase category is about recognising the extra miles that businesses go to in ensuring that their new migrant employees are welcomed and supported through the challenges of adjusting to Kiwi workplaces, while they settle and build a life in Wellington.

Immigration New Zealand Deputy Chief Executive Nigel Bickle says, “We are delighted to showcase three successful Wellington businesses through this initiative. All have shown that with commitment to their workplace culture, and supporting the settlement needs of new migrants and their families, migrant skills can enable business growth.

“We’re pleased to have selected such a good cross-section of businesses, reflecting the diversity of Wellington businesses that are supported with migrant skills.

“Wellington – like all regions – has always been reliant on migrant skills to help its businesses to prosper. Where skills can’t be sourced locally, Immigration New Zealand supports businesses to recruit and retain the best skills available from around the world”.

Immigration helps to build a stronger economy and create jobs by encouraging innovation, deepening our links with international markets and providing access to the skills and capital that businesses need for growth.
