Visa information for students outside of New Zealand.

Students can enter New Zealand if they are eligible for one of the following border exceptions:

  1. 1,000 new and returning students 
    Border class exception for 1,000 international students - Education in New Zealand
  2. 1,000 returning bachelor’s degree and postgraduate students
    Border exceptions for some returning international tertiary students – Education in New Zealand
  3. 250 new and returning PhD and postgraduate students
    Border exceptions for some returning international tertiary students – Education in New Zealand

Students must not request to travel to New Zealand until instructed to do so by their education provider.

Students must be nominated by their education provider and the Ministry of Education before requesting to travel to New Zealand. If you are nominated, you will still need to meet the requirements of the student visa category you apply under to be granted a visa.

You must meet New Zealand’s border entry requirements, including completing a 14-day stay in managed isolation or quarantine on arrival in New Zealand.

Partners and dependants may be able to apply for a relationship based visa, in line with current visa requirements.

Bringing family if you have a student visa

Studying online while outside New Zealand

People who are outside New Zealand can study online without a visa. If you would like to continue your study in New Zealand once border restrictions are lifted, you can provide evidence of your online study to support your visa application. You will still need to meet standard student visa requirements to be granted a student visa.
